CHALLENGE FUND

When The Bostonian Society started its planning for the 300th anniversary of the Old State House, we committed to extensive restorations and renovations to the building itself and to a comprehensive overhaul of our programs.

On top of the significant progress the Society has already made, we now have two funding opportunities that will help us take big strides forward. The first is a $150,000 challenge grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS) and the second is a $38,000 challenge grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund (MCFF). Each challenge requires us to raise matching gifts on a dollar-for-dollar basis. Your support for either of these challenges helps to keep our ambitious plans for the 300th anniversary on track.

Your gift to the Challenge Fund is tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.

PRESERVING THE OLD STATE HOUSE

The Old State House is Boston’s oldest public building (1713) and a National Historic Landmark.  Moreover, it is widely regarded as one of the most significant sites related to the American Revolution and the founding of the nation. The Old State House was the crucible of new ideas and bold actions that boiled over into the Revolution, and many of the basic principles of American democracy were first expressed here. John Adams described it as the place where “the child Independence was born.”

The Bostonian Society has developed a plan to stabilize, restore, and create a revolutionary new interpretation for the Old State House. The northeast corner of the building was successfully stabilized in 2006, but the work to preserve this iconic structure is far from over. Your contribution to the Old State House Restoration Fund will help the Society complete critical repairs and share the remarkable story of the building’s role in the nation’s founding narrative.

The Society also has launched a permanent fund for the ongoing preservation and maintenance of the Old State House. Income from this fund will be used to maintain the building in peak condition and prevent structural damage. The Society has set a goal of raising $3.5 million for the permanent fund. Your contribution to this fund will help ensure that the Old State House is preserved for future generations.
