About the Museum Collection

Our museum collection includes objects related to the Old State House and the history of Boston from prehistory to the present day. Our current mission emphasizes the 18th century items in our collection, but we welcome research requests related to any of the objects in our collection.

The strengths of our object collection include items related to John and Dorothy Hancock, the maritime history of Boston, firefighting from the 18th through 21st century, furniture, prints, textiles, and household items.

Search our online catalog to learn more about our holdings. If you have any questions related to the objects in our collection, please email collections@bostonhistory.org.

The library and museum are currently not accepting any donations, except those relating to the 18th century and the American Revolution. NOTE: The library and museum will not accept unsolicited donations through the mail or in person, and we reserve the right to dispose of unsolicited items. Please contact our staff if you have a possible donation.
