The library and archives is a closed-stack repository with a part-time staff, so we must limit our reference services to questions that pertain to the topics of the history of the Old State House, eighteenth-century Boston, Boston's role in the American Revolution, and to questions that relate directly to our manuscripts collection and photographs. The library staff responds to inquiries on Wednesdays between 9am and 5pm in the order in which they are received. Please note that reference requests may take several weeks to complete, and plan your research with this in mind. Submit your questions through our Reference Request Form below, by e-mailing our library, or by calling us at 617-720-1713 ext. 130.
Research in our Library
The Bostonian Society’s library is open to researchers by appointment only on Wednesdays. To request an appointment, please email our archivist with a list of the resources you wish to view. A full catalog of our library holdings can be browsed here. Appointments are contingent upon staff availability and the physical condition of materials. Admittance to the library is free, but we would welcome a $10.00 donation for services. Please review our library rules prior to your visit.
